Hello and welcome to the second Preptober post to prepare for National Novel Writing Month! I will most likely be posting these on Saturdays and either Tuesdays or Wednesdays. There may be some exceptions!
Today the focus is on the building of your world!
If anyone is interested, here is a site that allows you to build maps of your world. You can sign up for free, though you won’t have all the additional add ons.
Information About Today / Tomorrow’s Challenge-
This is about developing your world! Now would be a good time to come to a final decision on the genre of your story, as that will have a lot to do with this. Consider what type of world you want to create. Are there any specific landmarks that are important to the people of this world? Where do people live? How do people get natural resources? How advanced is your civilization?
Special note, if you are choosing to create a historical setting, now would be a good time to do some research! See what you can find about the area and time period you chose!
My Example-
My world is a fantasy world. It encompasses two groups of people. One group of people has several cities. The other group lives below and only has one small village.
The two villages are separated by a cliff. This cliff is the main feature of the world. The larger group lives on the upper part of this cliff, and the smaller group lives below the cliff. Halfway up this cliff is a small alcove where the two groups used to meet. A forest stretches along one side of the two groups, and a mountain range on the other.
The area above the cliff has three main cities and a large expanse of farms. The cities are advanced, though not many building extend very high. There are several lakes here where the people can get their water from. One city contains a large castle. All of the buildings are light colors. The area below the cliff is full of lakes and streams. Each body of water here is magically filled with a particular element. There is a river of solid ice, a meadow, a stream of lava, fire, poison, a river charged with lightning, and a normal river of water. All of these rivers have the tendency to flood often. Because of this, the people who live here have developed special floating boxes that they can wait in to overcome such floods. The main living area is a circle of large mushrooms, which each person living inside a mushroom. Their village is less advanced. These two groups of people have not been sharing new technology, which is why their lands are vastly different.
What is your world like?
Morning or early afternoon she said...*Coughs* That didn't happen :) Ok, my world is for sure more sci-fiction but has some elements of Fantasy.
It seems to be taking place on Earth, my made up planet, and possibly a ship (As of now for Earth, I am drawing inspiration from modern day geography and specific historical and modern landmarks, adding a more futuristic yet run-down design and look? I'll go more into that later if it becomes an integral part of my story :)
The spot that needs most building is the Planet of Fathan (May change the name). This is the home of one of the main girls of the story.
This planet has a decent population, not crowded or anything, but enough people that there is always life on the streets. Most of the colors on this planet are blue, purple, or Silver but other colors do make their appearance on occasion (Varying shades of course) and most, but not all things, shimmer like they were coated with a thin dusting of snow or glitter, kind of having a Cosmic aspect to it.
The waters on this planet have healing properties and can put out their fire. The fire glows blue and can be bottled, able to very effectively burn through anything it is held to and the bottling of it allows you to transport it or carry it in your pocket or in crates to different locations. It can be controlled by the people of this planet, but if it is released by someone who isn't, it will just eat everything in its path. Special bottles are forged to keep it contained.
The people of this planet mostly live in the main city. The buildings are mostly pastel shades of purple and blue.
(OH my brain!) Some famous or notable landmarks are the main building which is a shining silver building in the center of the city and a monument of their 'gift' near there (To be detailed later). The main building in my mind makes me think of Elsa's Ice castle and the Crystal Castle from MLP with a fantastical twist.
The city does not have a name, but it will eventually :)
The resources for this planet are collected (Farmed, mined, scavenged, hunted, collected) by this specie's personal helper (Others can do these activities if they want) . Kind of like a spirit animal?
(Also, a note. Earth may not be called Earth, but Terra or Tellus (Latin words for Earth) or possibly something else entirely by this other species.)
I think that is it...
there is a ship?
XD!! I'll figure this out later.
The story I am cultivating is based is America, starting out in New York City Central City park in New York. I am Planning on having Jack and the others visiting various national monuments/cities like the Washington monument, St Louis Arch, and other random things I can dig up on the internet. Really easy for my planning XD
My world takes place in the fictional CommonLands where people live. If selected, children under 16 are taken to the Academy, where they are taught to disable a deadly infection. ( Not giving away too much for privacy reasons)
My fanfiction takes place in the city of Thay, a postcolonial capital. (Thay is my invention ;) Thay is very similar to modern cities like Manila and certain Central American capitals. It is on an island chain and is situated on a large natural bay. It follows the Latin American city model, meaning that it has a central plaza, a long spine of affluence, and alternating slums and working class neighborhoods. Some important locations are the hospital, which is in the plaza, and Leorio's apartment, which is in the spine. On the outskirts of Thay, there is a large garbage dump "Thay-E" where a community of people live in penury as recyclers. Leorio grew up here and his parents still live in Thay-E.
I shall work on this in the morning and early afternoon, I don't have time to type it all out tonight :)
Alrighty! So for my story, it has the same landmarks and everything as the original Anok, except it has been overridden with the human population. Especially now when Rayne goes to the future, the safehouse and monitors are showing new signs of change, and everything feels so different. It takes place in a town with the normal town like features, and so on.
