You should read Rowan's profile, but here is the gist of her backstory:

Rowan lived in Johirestown with her mother Arya, who was a therapist and made delicious apple pie, and her father David. One day when she was out with her mother, they were attacked by a large feline, and Arya died defending Rowan. The loss of Arya made David cruel, and he physically and mentally abused Rowan until she ran away at the age of 14. She survived on her own, learning how to make the necessities of life and using a bow and arrow to hunt and defend herself. She has a dragon necklace given to her by her mother, which she always wears.

The Story of Rowan

We first meet Rowan alone in a nasty cave, waiting out a rainstorm that had destroyed the small campsite where she lived alone. A small centaur girl comes through a tunnel from another cave, lost. Rowan is familiar with the cave tunnels and successfully leads the girl, Viola, back to the cave she came from, which is in Sun Herd territory. There, Rowan meets Kilroy, Ashtohn, Sage, and Espen. This is a lot of people for the solitary mare. Ashtohn greats her and explains what happened. He and Sage were kidnapped by Pegasi, and after Viola saw what happened, she, Espen, and Kilroy came to arrange for Ashtohn's release. Rowan shares the fruit she brought (she tries to prepare for everything), and Kilroy quizzes her on the configuration of the cave tunnels. He then asks her to stay behind in Pegasi territory to guard Ashtohn while he takes Sage, Espen, and Viola back, as he senses she is a realistic and trustworthy person. Reluctantly, she agrees.

After the rain stops, Kilroy leaves and Rowan guards Ashtohn. Soon Kilroy returns and negotiates with Coalwing, unsuccessfully. He stays and tells Rowan she can leave, but she elects to stay. Finally, they are able to get Ashtohn free with the help of Fawnroot, the medicine mare. Kilroy needs to stay to improve relations, but Rowan can leave because her job is done.

Rowan is crying alone in the cave when Kilroy finds her. She is suffering from traumatic flashbacks. Kilroy tells her that he believes in her, and she hints at her backstory. He tries to pay her, but she declines. When Kilroy tells her she can go home, she confides she has no home to go to, then leaves.

She returns to her childhood home to retrieve Arya's things she left behind, and faces David. He tries to dismiss the past abuse and make peace with her, but she punches him and leaves.

After this, she runs into Kilroy who has returned from Pegasi lands. Along with Espen, they go to the Tavern to get something to eat, but find it filled with wolf attack victims. Avery, a crush of Kilroy's, gives them tea and biscuits. David comes to get a drink and sees Rowan, but Kilroy senses something is wrong and calls her over to help him. Rowan comes over gratefully and Kilroy asks what had happened between them. Rowan tells him about the abuse. They bond a bit more before they part ways.

David follows Kilroy back to the grain silo where he works and asks him questions about Rowan, but Kilroy dodges all of them. Eventually, David leaves.

Later, Kilroy finds Rowan camping along the river and takes her on wht both would refuse to admit is a date. They fish and learn about each other. At Kilroy's question of how far she can take violence, she admits that she only would protect herself. She is considering becoming a soldier but Kilroy strongly advices against it, based on personal experience. He encourages her to pursue her childhood dream of becoming a therapist like her mother.

Kilroy sells the fish they caught and uses the money to buy them each dumplings, because he knows Rowan has no money of her own. He asks her to deliver an anonymous letter to a Councillor for him, and she does.

Tristan and Cameron: These twins still bear the scars of a wolf attack when they were younger. In the present day, Cameron, who is a camp counselor, is attacked by a wolf but is able to fend it off with the help of a centaur named Sultaan.

Later, Tristan sees Kylie, another centaur. Both secretly have crushes on the other. He tries to take her out for lunch because she forgot her lunch, but she is very difficult even though she hardly gets anything to eat. After several failed attempts and fainting spells, he manages to get her to eat a home made ham sandwich. They part ways.

During a big festival, Cameron is kidnapped secretly by Mountain Herd Pegasi, who bind her and a centaur named Daniel up in ropes. They fly away. Somewhere on the way to Mountain Herd territory, they land for a break. A tiger attacks the group, and one of the pegasi frees both. Cameron runs away.

Meanwhile, another wolf attack wracks the camp. Tristan and Kylie look around desperately for their sisters. Kylie finds hers and goes home with her, but Tristan does not as Cameron is now far away.

Whitestar: A young foal, son of Bluewhisper. He is blind and sneezes a lot.
