So, I have been inactive on the MB for a long while and in the process, completely forgotten everything that happened in the books. :/ When I originally read the series I borrowed them from a friend, so I don't have my own copies. I want to start reading the ROTR series again but I feel like the context from the Guardian Herd is important. Can anyone recap them for me?

Every century there is a black pegasus foal born. On their first birthday, they will inherit the power of the Hundred Year Star (it shines in th sky like a second sun from the day the foal is born to the day the foal receives the power. it disappears afterwords).
THE FIRST (LIVING) BLACK FOAL
Nightflame, aka Nightwing, was the first black foal to survive birth. He was born to Jungle Herd.
His best friend Hollyblaze died when he could have helped her. Her death turned him sour.
When he gained the starfire, Nightflame fled Anok, though nobody knows why. He came back a little later and turned on the herds, destroying almost all of the Pegasi.
He kept two alive; Spiderwing and his mate. Spiderwing was Hollyblaze's brother, which is most likely why Nightflame didn't kill him.
Spiderwing and his mate were the ones to birth and raise the five over stallions of Anok.
Nightflame fled Anok again and went into hibernation in a Landwalker cave across the Great Sea.
STAR/STARFIRE
Star was born to Lightfeather, a Snow Herd mare adopted by Silvercloud and Thunderwing of Sun Herd. Lightfeather bled out and died hours after Star's birth.
Thunderwing grew to hate Star because of his destiny.
Silvercloud took in Star as her own, as Lightfeather had been her best friend. She weaned her own filly, Morningleaf, early to make more milk for Star, who can't fly due to his big wings.
Star's friends are Morningleaf, his best friend, the twins Echofrost and Bumblewind, the twins, Silvercloud (later on Silverlake), Sweetroot the medicine mare, and later Dewberry, a fierce warrior mare.
Star's enemies are the bullies Stripestorm and Brackentail, who tease him about being a dud. Flamesky hangs around those two but never directly harasses Star.
Brackentail tries to trick Star to getting him to run off a cliff to kill him, which ends in both Brackentail and Echofrost getting captured by Mountain Herd steeds.
Mountain Herd's yearlings make a game of harassing Echofrost before she is released, whereas Brackentail bargains with Rockwing and gives him information about Sun Herd.
Silvercloud hides Star in a cave on the coast, which causes her to be banished from Sun Herd.
Silverlake tells Sun Herd that Mountain Herd is planning an attack, and Mountain Herd launches said attack on Sun Herd and wins.
Star gets ambushed by Jungle Herd steeds, which makes him find out how to fly. An orca kills the Jungle Herd overstallion, Snakewing, and the steeds blame Star for it.
Star runs and is found by Sweetroot, Silverlake and Crystalfeather. They tend to his wounds and tell him about the attack.
On the night of Star's birthday, Star sacrifices himself in exchange for Morningleaf's life. Thunderwing goes to kill him but Morningleaf runs in front of the deathblow instead.
Star gets his starfire and heals Morningleaf, ultimately bringing her back to life.
Star sets off to make his own herd, River Herd, made out of all the pegasi who wish to follow him.
STORMBOUND
Star's new herd is homeless and harassed by predators.
A lot of stuff happens like a plague of Blue Tongue, Frostfire (a Snow/Mountain Herd captain) steals Morningleaf and hides her in the lava tubes in Jungle Herd in order to get Star to give Sun Herd's homeland to Mountain Herd, who has outgrown their territory horribly.
Shadepebble and Clawfire, the former from Mountain Herd and the latter from Snow Herd, are banished after Clawfire kidnaps Shadepebble and they wander into River Herd, and they want to stay.
Star kills a bear and realises he has both gold starfire (Healing fire) and silver starfire (Destroying fire).
Rockwing, Shadepebble's dad and overstallion of Mountain Herd, wants Shadepebble back, sparking another war.
Morningleaf escapes and flies back to Star, who catches her so she doesn't completely break herself while flying in the jet streams.
Amidst the chaos, Nightflame, now known as Nightwing, arrives in Anok and lands in between the two fighting herds. Nightflame kills both Rockwing and Thundersky (formerly Thunderwing).
LANDFALL
Star and Nightflame (I refuse to call him by an overstallion name) fight and Nightflame manages to shut down Star's system, putting him to sleep, though not dead.
Star learns all pegasi killed by Nightflame are trapped in this place called the Beyond.
An army of weanlings that Nightflame killed, lead by his best friend Hollyblaze, protects Star from Nightflame and Star's herd grabs him and flees to the Trap, a big forest so thick you can't fly. Most of the other herds follow.
The spies in River Herd find out Nightflame has made a pact with two pegasi - Pebblecloud (lead mare of Snow Herd) and Frostfire; if they bring Star's head to Nightflame, he'll let them rule by his side.
Frostfire creates the Black Army (which is defeated by the United Herd) and Pebblecloud creates her Ice Warriors.
Morningleaf, Shadepebble, and Brackentail all set out on a mission to be decoys in the west, south and north to draw the Ice Warriors and Black Army away from where Star really is.
During the mission, Star wakes up.
When Morningleaf, Brackentail and Shadepebble come back, Echofrost calls for a celebration.
She introduces others to a bunch of berries which turn out to be poisonous and are later nicknames the "death-berries".
Star heals them, reviving his connection to Nightflame, who calls for his two battalions to fight them.
During this, Echofrost and Brackentail make up with each other and their hatred is dissolved.
Hazelwind urges everyone to flee but Star gives him a speech about training every pegasus in the Trap to become a warrior.
The other leaders of the Herds make an agreement to trade herd secrets and tactics in order to fight both the Black Army, Ice Warriors and later, Nightflame himself.
They defeat the Black Army and the Ice Warriors by Star healing everyone, including the enemies from the Black Army.
The herd is celebrating when Star hears a cry for help. He leaves his friends to find a badly hurt Larksong (Frostfire's best friend and future mate). Once she's healed he learns she's carrying foal. Her guilt drives her to confess that Petalcloud had set up a trap.
Star runs back to his friends but it's too late. Nightflame has burst a whole in the trees and taken all the pegasi, and burnt the ones who resisted to ash.
Star promises he will find them and defeat Nightwing.
The book ends there.
WINDBORN
Star finds out Frostfire (who's mates with Larksong) was also left behind and the two have to work together to find out where Nightflame took the herds.
Spoiler alert, he took the herds to the interior of Anok and dubs them "Wind Herd".
Morningleaf, Bumblewind, Hazelwind, Echofrost, Shadepebble, Dewberry and Brackentail all pretend to have drowned and hide out in a direwolf den. Bumblewind gets thrown into a tree headfirst by one of the direwolves and later slips away.
Star and Frostfire find out Star can camoflauge using the starfire.
They eventually make it to Wind Herd's territory, and Star makes an agreement with Nightflame: If Star builds Nightflame a tribute (a gigantic stone tower), Nightflame won't execute any duds or walkers (which he was going to do).
One day Star visits his friends and finds out, boy, they ain't dead.
While all this is happening, the friends, who are supposedly dead, are building a tunnel from the lake to their den. They plan to use it so other pegasi can slip out and escape once it's done.
When Bumblewind dies, Hazelwind and Brackentail bring it to Star so he can bury him under the tribute (so Star literally "buries a friend" x get slapped x) so the tribute becomes theirs and signifies their love for Bumblewind.
Larksong gives birth to a colt, Starfrost whom she named after both Star and her mate Frostfire, and the colt is stolen by Petalcloud who had just birthed a filly and stillborn colt.
A bunch of stuff happens which includes Frostfire blabbing about it to Nightflame in exchange for both Larksong's and Starfrost's safety and the tunnels collapse.
This causes Nightflame to make the stone tribute topple down, and it lands on Petalcloud, killing her.
In a last-ditch attempt, Star confronts Nightflame and the two battle for the last time.
Star wins by allowing Nightflame to transfer all of the hatred in his silverfire over to him, which Star then gives back, destroying Nightflame.
Star's starfire evaporates and he wins the battle.
He rejoins his friends (save for around 200 pegasi including Echofrost and Hazelwind and Dewberry who all flee across the dark water to spread their population) and the book ends with this:
“Star rejoined Morningleaf, him on her right flank and Brackentail on her left. He saw them talking like they were old friends, like two trees who shared the same light. Then Star realised he was that light, and for once he felt pleased instead of jealous.
Star relaxed and felt the sun on his coat.
He was a normal pegasus, he belonged to a giant herd, and his best friend was leading him home.”
