Every day I set an alarm to write for 15 minutes and either add on to an existing story or start a new one. I almost never have an outline, I just get an idea and run with it. Sure, I could read it later, cringe, laugh, and change it, but the idea, the plot, is there. It's fun (generally XD), it relaxes me, and I'm training myself.
When you read, you subconsciously memorize spelling, sentence structures, and basic rules for writing. You pick up the elements of a story without thinking about it. Reading others' work strengthens your own writing.
NOTE: Writing and reading everyday helps with writer's block. Whenever I'm stuck, I flounder. Reading can not only give you ideas, it can improve your mood. Writing anything also increases your creativity and focus levels.
I totally agree with @Wispiflower and @Echoheart (Echomoon)
Tip: Write and read everyday.
