THE BATTLE
Echosong flew toward Spiritstorm at her top speed, slicing her chest. “Come on, mare. Show me what you can do—” she stopped mid-sentence as a huge fireball zipped right past her head. Echosong flapped her wings, shocked. “Not bad,” she said, snorting. “But still not good enough to stop me!” whinnied Echosong, blasting Spiritstorm in the leg.
Spiritstorm winced, biting back the pain. “You will never win! I’ll be certain of that!” she whinnied, waves of electricity rolling over her glossy white coat. They flew around each other, trading blows.
Suddenly, Spiritstorm got blasted in the chest, causing her to somersault out of control. She fell towards Dreamer Lake. She fell back-first into the lake and began to sink toward the bottom. I need to get out of here! thought Spiritstorm. She began to kick her legs, trying to swim to the surface. She was able to make it to the surface but realized she was very far away from shore.
“Where’s As? Is she alright?” asked Galaxystar. whinnied, shocked. “How do you know the name of my opposite side?” she neighed. Galaxystar looked at Spiritstorm's sharp hooves. “I met her when you and I were flying around the herd . . .” she said, still somewhat scared of Spiritstorm and her magical abilities. Spiritstorm began advancing on her sister, not believing her at all.
She turned around and was about to fly away, but then she saw a figure rise out of the lake. It was Spiritstorm! Spiritstorm tried to reach out to her sister with her wing, but she fell onto the cold, damp sand, out of breath.
“Spiritstorm!” exclaimed Galaxystar, worried. Spiritstorm was able to get up and sit down. “Yes?” she asked, coughing.
“Where did you go?” asked Galaxystar.
Where did I go? Is that all she’ll ask?! No “are you alright?” thought Spiritstorm. “You blasted me out of the sky and into Dreamer Lake!” she neighed.
Spiritstorm ended the argument by pushing past Galaxystar.
Galaxystar’s ears drooped, showing her fear. “I’m sorry, Spiritstorm,” she said. Spiritstorm stamped her hoof on the sand. “A sorry is not enough to be forgiven. If apologies could fix everything, why would we need guards? Why would there have been wars if sorries could work?” she said.
Galaxystar said nothing. Spiritstorm kicked Galaxystar in the shin, sending her hurtling away from them. Lightningray went to his sister and sat down next to her. Spiritstorm hated to admit it, but maybe Echosong was right about her.
“You okay, sis?” asked Lightningray.
“Yeah . . .” said Galaxystar. Spiritstorm stormed up to Galaxystar with an angry look on her face. “Why did you yell at me? I did nothing to you!” she neighed, angry. Galaxystar said nothing and scooted closer to Lightningray.
“You’re weak, Galaxystar. No wonder Mother hates you,” said Spiritstorm, shaking her head in disgust and flying away. Lightningray gave Spiritstorm a low growl and looked at Galaxystar. “I don’t understand why she’s so rude to you like that,” he said. Galaxystar looked up at her brother.
“Whatever . . .” said Galaxystar with a sad face. Echosong was battling the entire herd by herself, and the herd was losing the fight.
Spiritstorm sat alone, looking around for her mother. When she spotted her, she walked to Thundermist. “Mother? Can I talk with you for a few minutes?” she asked. Thundermist nodded her head in response.
“I was wondering if you had any other foals after me?” she asked.
“Yes, I did. I named them Galaxyshatter and Lightningblaze. Why?”
“So, they are my siblings?”
“Of course they are! I hadn’t raised them to be liars!”
“Mother, I’m not saying that! I was just shocked!”
Thundermist stared at Spiritstorm and then up to her other foals. It’s time I left for another world. thought Thundermist. Spiritstorm read her mind. “Another world?” she wondered aloud.
