Chapter 9: Dawnlight

Stormsong stood in her stall, chomping on hay. Skyfall was asleep in the stall next to hers, dreaming. Stormsong sighed and sat down on her haunches, her dusty wings splayed out beside her. She bit her lip and lay her head on top the hay, flicking her ears at every noise. Almost all the Kihlari were asleep, some were just eating, or quietly talking with the others.

Stormsong thought about earlier today. The Queen, the female Landwalker who wore the large sparkling crown, had stared at her in disgust, and had eyed her wings as if they were rotting garbage. Stormsong lifted her head and stared at her wings. She shook her head sadly and blinked rapidly before rolling over and staring at the ceiling, and at the ropes that they had draped above her stall.

“As if I could escape,” Stormsong muttered in disgust. She sighed.

Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw something flicker and shine. Stormsong got to her hooves and peeked out of her stall.

“Hello, my sweet filly.” Dawnlight poked her head into Stormsong’s stall and nuzzled her filly.

“Mama? Mama! How are you here!? Mama...,” Stormsong bleated softly, staring at her mother's transparent body, and then looked up into her eyes, which shone like bright suns.

Dawnlight smiled sadly, “How have you been?”

“I don’t know...but how are you here? I’ve missed you.” Stormsong hiccupped back a sob. “Are you still sick? And why do you look...strange?” Stormsong stared into her mother’s eyes.

Dawnlight looked at her filly, and a tear slid down her cheek. “I... I was very sick...and...” Dawnlight bit her lip and arched her neck. “I died in Storm Herd. My new home is the Golden Meadow.”

Stormsong screamed and reared. Dawnlight vanished. “Mother!” Stormsong shouted, and collapsed in her stall and sobbed.

Skyfall awoke, “What’s wrong, Stormsong, what’s wrong?” Skyfall got to her hooves and reared. She stood on her hind hooves and arched her neck so she could get a better view of Stormsong. “What’s wrong?” she whispered softly.

Now the whole barn was nickering and squealing, for they had woken up, hearing Stormsong’s scream.

“Are you alright, darling?” Rain asked.

Stormsong looked up at Rain, “No... you wouldn’t understand.” Stormsong looked at Skyfall. “My mother...” Stormsong burst into to tears.

Skyfall’s eyes widened. “What is it? What happened?”

“My mother...she’s...”

Stormsong was interrupted by loud neighing and rapid shouting, coming from outside. There was a loud squeal and a heart-breaking scream.
