So this isn't about TGH or anything like that, but I got this story idea while I was baking yesterday, and spent literally all day thinking about it until I was able to get on my computer and write it XD I've always been fascinated by mermaid legends and sirens, and was honestly excited to do some research on it for this short story. You have NO IDEA how obsessed I was with mermaids when I was little, it was hardcore XD ANYWAYS, just a small warning that this might be a bit dark/gruesome, and pretty different than my usual writing, but OHMYGOSH I HAD THE BEST TIME WRITING THIS!!!!
I recommend listening to this while reading it to help get in the mood of the story XD
I hope you like the story!!!
The Siren
Alliese smiled serenely. She floated in the ocean, her head just above the surface. Her light blond hair floated on the surface of the water, pillowing out behind her, the silver streaks reflecting the moonlight. She watched as the boat drew nearer, the men aboard scrambling to keep the boat upright in the storm. She outstretched her mottled grey arms, which gave off an odd green-ish tint in the correct lighting. Her teeth and fingernails were sharp, and her fingers and arms long, thin, and bony. She had a long, dark grey serpent's tail instead of legs, with black fins. She also had side fins that flared out whenever her emotions ran high. Like now. Her hauntingly pale blue eyes with slitted pupils shone in determination and anticipation. It was storms like this, boats like this, that made for the perfect kill.
She was a siren; a daughter of the sea. Once the daughter of one of the kingdomâs highest ranking Lords and Ladies, Alliese had met her death when she was sixteen years old and was tossed overboard whilst caught in a storm when traveling. It was a huge storm, and the boat was sinking. The men onboard who were supposed to be protecting her instead threw her overboard along with some luggage to lighten the load. Suddenly they heard beautiful singing, and the men tossed themselves overboard too, so they could get closer to it. They immediately drowned, while Alliese was still struggling.
For seven long, agonizing minutes Alliese fought the ocean. Something, someone, had grabbed her legs and pulled her under the surface and kept her there. Her lungs filled with water, and she began to drown. Just before she was about to die, her legs turned dark gray and fused together, and black fins replaced her feet. Gills grew behind her ears, and her pupils thinned and became slitted like a catâs. Her structure became thinner and more bony, and her skin turned a mottled gray with green tints. Silver streaks now ran through her pale blond hair and her hazel eyes became a ghostly blue. Her teeth and fingernails sharpened, to the point where they could pierce flesh. She could now breathe the water, and it became her new life force. She screamed.
âCome, my sister. There is no need to be scared.â A chilling voice said. A creature swam up to Alliese. âGreetings, my sister. I am Morgana.â The creature looked as Alliese now did, with gray skin, dark gray tail, and slitted eyes. Only Morganaâs eyes were a startlingly bright green, and her hair was a dull yet dark red, with streaks of chestnut. Her tail and side fins were a light silver.
Allieseâs eyes darted around in fear. âWh-whatâs happened to me? Why do I look like this?â She stared at her gray skin and sharp fingernails in terror.
Morgana lifted Allieseâs chin up with her hand, and Alliese slapped it away, drawing a bit of blood from her sharp nails, and swam a few strokes back. Her eyes widened, surprised that she knew how to swim.
Morgana laughed. "The KairĎs were correct with you, I see. A strong spirit indeed."
Alliese's slitted eyes narrowed and she swam farther away, her eyes clouded in suspicion. "The what?! And I am not your sister!" She snapped. Her black side fins flared out.
"The KairĎs, the Weathercasters. They conjure up storms like this one. They can also weave clouds and water together to see the future.â Morgana explained.
âWhy do I look like this?â Alliese was scratching her arm mercilessly, trying to see if the gray skin would come off.
âMy dear, my sister. You are a daughter of the sea, now. A siren. As am I. We sirens are bonded together by a sisterhood, by the sea. We have all suffered the same fate as you, young girls tossed overboard in a storm. Every one of us was near drowning when the sea took pity on us and turned us into sirens. Those who were older than age 25 turned into the KairĎs. We work together to protect the sea as it had protected us, and we seek revenge on those who betrayed us and the seaâs trespassers.. The KairĎs create a storm and a siren sings the boatmen to their death. If there is a young girl aboard, the siren will hold her under the water, as I had done you, and if they have a strong enough spirit, they become a siren, as you have now. If they donât, they drown.â
Alliese stared wide-eyed at Morgana. âBut- but thatâs impossible, sirens are just a stupid myth! Theyâre not real!â
Morgana chuckled. âThatâs what we want you to believe. We are only visible to those we wish to kill. And to them, we appear as beautiful young women, and not the immortal creatures the sea has made us.â
âI-i-immortal?â Alliese stammered.
Morgana swept her gray arms wide, gesturing to the sea around them. âWe are daughters of the sea, and are as immortal as the sea itself. The only way for us to die is for us to be captured by those who hold the soul of the one who first drowned us. In the rare case that happens, our soul returns to the water, keeping it alive and our magic protects itâs secrets.â
Allieseâs dark gray tail whipped around, and her side fins flared out. âSo⌠Iâm a siren?â
Morgana smiled, and her sharp teeth glinted. âIndeed. As is custom with a new siren and the one who drowned her ship, I am to help guide you while you understand your new life. Tell me, my sister, how did you feel whilst you were drowning?â
âTerrified.â
âAnd how did you feel towards the boatmen, who were supposed to protect you?â
âBetrayed.â
Morgana was dissatisfied. âDig deep into your feelings, Alliese. How does your soul feel to those men?â
âI-I wanted to get revenge, to have them feel the fear that I felt.â In that instant, Allieseâs eyes grew colder and paled to a ghostly blue. Her teeth and fingernails got sharper, and her slitted pupils thinned. She was a true siren now.
Morgana smiled and held out her hand for Alliese to take. âCome. The tides have foretold a sailorâs ship is a few miles north of here. It is time for your first lesson.â
They swam to the ship, and drowned it. Allies was surprised and how free she felt. After that, it didnât take long for her to get the hang of it, and she excelled at it. Her anger and thirst for revenge at the boatment who drowned her fueled her magic, and it grew with each kill she made. Every twelve moon cycles the sirens all over the world would meet with the KairĎs, to reunite with their sisters and introduce new ones. Alliese was welcomed with open arms, and the sirens were impressed with her abilities.
The abilities that she woud now use to drown this ship.
Alliese dove under the water, and her black fins slapped the surface, creating a splash that got the boatmenâs attention. There was a small rock near the boat, and she climbed up on it, hauling her serpentâs tail up. To those men, she would appear as a beautiful young girl, and her tail would appear as legs.
The storm grew stronger, and the rain poured down, filling the boat with water. Alliese smiled. It was her time. She began to sing.
Come, dear men, your time is near
Time to see your deepest fears.
Your soul will release,
Your body dies.
You will now see the deep blue.
Aaaaaaaah,
Aaaaaaahaaaaaah,
Aaaaaaaah.
Her voice was beautiful. It was haunting and tugged at the hearts of everyone who hears it. The men on board scrambled to the side of the ship, trying to see where the beautiful sound was coming from. They saw Alliese on the rocks, and began to toss themselves overboard to get to her.
You will now see,
The wrath of the sea.
The waterâs curse,
A sirenâs bloodthirst.
Aaaaahaaaaaaaah,
Aaah
Aaaaaahaaah
Aaaaaaaahaaaaaa.
The rain pelted down on their heads, pushing the men under the water.
Your death is near,
You now have learned,
To never cross
The great sea,
Aaaaahaaaaaaahaaaaah.
Aaaahaaaaah
AAAhaaaaaaaah!
Alliese smiled, satisfied with her work. The ocean was littered with bodies, but they soon would sink and become fish food.
âHELP!!â someone screamed. It looked like a girl around the age of 13.
Alliese dove under the water, and clamped the girlâs legs together and pulled her under the surface. The girl struggled, but slowly her legs fused together and turned dark gray. Gills grew behind her ears and dusty pink fins sprouted. She stopped struggling, and her pupils turned into slits, and her dark brown eyes turned a pale red. Bronze streaks ran through her dark brown hair. Her skin turned gray, and her teeth sharpened.
The girl gasped and swung around to face Alliese.
Alliese smiled at her and bowed low. âGreetings, my sister. I am Alliese. May I know your name?â
The girl backed up, her eyes wide and trembling. âM-Mira,â
âGreetings, Mira. Come with me. I will do you no harm.â She held out her hand to Mira. Mira took Allieseâs hand, and Alliese led her over to a small sea cave.
âWhat- What happened to me?â Mira asked, her voice trembling.
Alliese smiled, remembering asking this very question many many years ago. âYoua re now a siren, a daughter of the sea.â She explained to Mira everything Morgana had explained to her, and everything the siren before her had explained to Morgana.
Mira listened with wide eyes. SHe didnât seem overwhelmed, or scared. She took it all in stride, even asking questions before Alliese could finish talking.
This girl has a strong spirit. A brave one, too. Alliese thought. The KairĎs and tides were correct, a strong force was indeed coming to the seas.
