The Shattered Herd
Prologue
Thousands of years after the death of Star, the Herds were five once again. A few hundred years before the birth of Skysun, the Desert Herd filly this story will revolve around, River Herd was split. Most were enthralled by the stories of the old herds, and how they dominated the sky and mastered the elements of their territories, keeping their herd secrets and passing them on to future generations. Civil war ensued between those steeds who wanted to split into five, and those who believed Star’s ideals of peace and unity was the best option. After ten long years of all out war, River Herd finally relented, and let those who wished to split from the herd to split. These herds named themselves after the herds of old, Desert, Jungle, Snow, and Mountain. While the Civil War of River Herd, also known in history as The Great Split, is an interesting topic, that is not where our story will center, instead, our story is centered almost three hundred years later, and will follow the story of Skysun, my ‘mane’ OC, and a very important time in her life. Enjoy!
The Vein Between Mountain Herd and Desert Herd
Two stallions stood facing each other, their wings rattling in slight agitation. The cold wind that blew from the mountains caused the chestnut stallion to shiver, but the short gray stallion seemed undisturbed by the cool wind. The chestnut stallion looked at the mare beside him to the grey stallion.
“Why did you call us here, Cragwing?” He asked.
“You know full well why we’re here, Camelwing.” The grey stallion said waving his wing dismissively. Camelwing raised a skeptical eyebrow.
“Yes, your messenger explained but, forgive me for being blunt, am I really to believe that you want peace with us?” He asked.
“Yes,” Cragwing said with a nod.
“We’re tired of all the senseless fighting,” Said Pinecloud, her dark grey hide glittering in the moonlight, her pine green feathers folded neatly onto her back. Camelwing glanced back at the mare beside him, his mate, Galecloud.
“But you are the ones who started this whole conflict in the first place.” Galecloud said, ruffling her pale red wings. Camelwing knew full well that there may be a hidden agenda behind Cragwing’s call for peace. But did the threat that there MAY be a hidden agenda outweigh the fact that they could have peace and stop the senseless fighting between their herds? Glancing at the Mountain Herd Over-Stallion and his mate, he realized that while they may be lying to them, he had to risk it. Spreading his wide golden wings, he commanded the attention of the group.
“We accept your call for peace, and, as your conditions state, we will not attack you or your herd, we will not trespass on your territory, nor shall you trespass on ours, and we will ally ourselves with you if the need arises.”
Galecloud gawked at her mate, her jaw dropping. “Camelwing, surely you want to talk this over with…”
“No, Galecloud.” Camelwing snapped. “I have my reasons for agreeing to the peace as quickly as I did, and we will speak of them when we return to the Red Rock Mountains.”
Galecloud snorted but nodded in agreement. “As you say, Camelwing…” She muttered.
“We should return to our herds.” Cragwing said, spreading his wide blue wings. The Desert Herd Over-Stallion nodded, nudging his mate in the direction of home.
“Let’s go.” He stated, leaping into the air and taking flight towards the desert that he called his home. During their flight, Galecloud drew up beside him, their wingttips barely a hair width away from each other.
“You better have a good explanation for accepting the peace treaty.” She said, a slight growl in her voice.
“I said I did, and I will tell you everything when we get back and we can talk to Snakefire.” He said. Galecloud pinned her ears back.
“As I said, you BETTER have a good explanation…”
Camelwing glanced at his mate, a smile tugging at his lips. Even if his reasoning wasn’t good, he knew that she wouldn’t do anything to him, they loved each other too much to cause any REAL damage. But even so, he hoped that his reasoning WAS good.
“For all our sakes…” He murmured, continuing the flight in silence.
