Ravensong, Moonstone, Lakesky, and Thunderstone had all flown to Horsetail Falls. They planned to spend the whole day there, because it was one of the hottest days of summer. They played in the water together all morning. They played water tag and other fun water games. The four fillies had been in the midst of trying to splash each other when they heard a loud, terrifying growl. Slowly, they turned and there, standing on the bank was a humongous grizzly bear.

The fillies squealed in alarm and tried to take off, but their wings were waterlogged and couldn't hold their weight for flight. The bear started into the water, ready for his meal. The fillies galloped out of the water away from the bear, but it was faster than them. In no time at all, the bear was back on land and had headed off the fillies. He stopped in front of them and surveyed them. Then he reached out with his paw and lifted Moonstone off the ground.

"No! Moonstone!" Ravensong whinnied. She kicked the bear in its side and left a trickle of blood. Lakesky and Thunderstone gasped. Ravensong had sharpened her hooves, and she was only a weanling! They immediately joined in the attack on the great bear.

Suddenly a blur of red feathers appeared. It was Stormcloud. She swooped over the bears head and pummeled it with her hooves. This dazed him enough to release Moonstone. She fluttered to the ground, and Stormcloud screamed, "RUN!!!"

The fillies tore off, dodging trees with their water-logged wings dragging along behind them. As they broke through the forest and into Sky Meadow, they heard a piercing growl followed by Stormcloud screaming her last words at the bear, "You can eat me, but you can't eat my filly and her-" She shrieked, and Ravensong knew in her heart that her mother was dead, because of her daughter.
