Note- I typed all of this on my phone, so it’s not perfect, but I hope you like it!
As the lights pierced her newborn child’s face, DownPour realized that the look on her once kind mate, StormSky, was filled with hatred and power. DownPour looked down at her newborn filly, and for a brief moment, she wasn’t sure if this filly belonged to her. The little filly’s innocent young face had not yet been touched by the evil in the world. She swallowed oncoming sobs, and smiled at the little filly. “Oh my sweet baby.” She whispered, pressing her snout against the little filly’s cheek.
The little filly nickered happily, and swished her fluffy dark brown tail. A younger chestnut appaloosa watched his newborn sister with awe, his dark brown eyes full with wonder. DownPour looked at the young colt with pain. Oh my poor RainBreeze.
The filly whinnied for attention, and StormSky laughed. “Now that’s my little seeker. Come to daddy.”
The little filly nickered, and stumbled to her hooves. She took a few steps towards the stallion, her hooves balancing her small fragile body. One step, two, two step, three.
StormSky got impatient and swept the small chestnut appaloosa filly into his blood colored wings. RainBreeze came to stand by his mother, his hooves sinking softly into the brown earth. “What’s her name, mommy?” He asked quietly, his own blood and steel gray wings settled on his sides.
DownPour stiffened, and forced a smile. “Oh honey, her name… her name is-“
“TyphoonShade!” StormSky grinned. “Because she’s a little fighter, aren’t you?”
In the few seconds StormSky had the little filly, he had managed to pin her down with a hoof, pressing her struggling body to the ground. DownPour gasped. “StormSky stop! You’re hurting her!” She pushed the stallion off of the little filly, and pulled her in with her soft gray wings.
StormSky grinned. “What’s the matter with you? She needs training at an early age so she can grow up to be big and strong, then we can get our own territory.” He pawed the ground, and RainBreeze hid closer to DownPour.
DownPour sighed sadly, knowing she wouldn’t be able to argue about this. She just looked down at her daughter, and without any thought said, “RainShade.”
RainBreeze tipped his head. “Like my name!” He said cheerfully. “She’ll have a little bit of my name!” The little colt buzzed with happiness as DownPour nodded with an absent mind.
StormSky let out a gruff mutter, before turning away and flying off.
RainBreeze watched his father go, and came to rest beside his mother and newborn baby sister. RainShade was pleased to be with the young colt, and she curled up beside him. Soon she was snoring softly like a cicada in the night, and RainBreeze slept soundly beside her.
DownPour didn’t watch her children as her mind churned with the thought of the secret stallion she met up with. Now she was positive, she couldn’t live with a stallion like StormSky anymore, especially if he only cared about power.
DownPour looked around the meadow, and sighed. The best thing I can do to keep myself safe is to leave. I might as well be dead in their eyes. She looked down at her sleeping children, and shuddered. They looked too much like their sire, and she couldn’t take them with her anyways.
She rattled her feathers, and soon her mind was decided. She began to set up the crime site- shedding her feathers, stomping around, and using different techniques to make it seem like there was a fight. Finally, when she was sure her plan was solid, she made it seem like there was an effort in taking her away- and she really did fly away. So long, my sweet children.
DownPour flew several days and nights without stopping, until she finally landed on a pebbly beach. She panted heavily, and smiled. A buckskin fjord waited for her in the sea cave she called her real home.
Two small foals whinnied in delight when they saw the mare, and DownPour smiled. This was her real family.
The fjord stepped forward, and smiled, moving his wing to reveal a small filly, roughly about a year old. DownPour remembered when she had to lie about the foals who had come before RainShade. RainBreeze was her oldest, but DownPour had met SmokeFeather soon after, and she had spent a lot more time with him instead. She had to fake so many deaths over the years, but this should be the last one she would ever have to take.
“Mommy!” The filly cried as she raced toward her mother with her lilac and soft gray wings spread open.
DownPour smiled, and exhaled. “Oh my darlings.” She said softly, watching as one of the other colts came to join her as well.
The colt that had stayed behind- a palomino with a golden mane and tail- stayed beside SmokeFeather.
DownPour sighed. “Don’t worry everyone. I’ll be here for the rest of time. I promise. Now ThunderSong, RiverFeather, I want you to always be there for each other. Even if… even if I can’t keep you safe from the truth.”
The two foals didn’t know understand at the time what that meant, but now they finally did, as they went to find their half brother and sister.
