Lighfrost woke to loud thunder rumbling and bitter-cold rain pelting down onto her. She stood up and shook the droplets out of her mane. As she looked around she realised that Crystalwave had gone with her older brother to see their sire train. Oaktail was feeding from Morningleaf not far from where Lightfrost was. “Where did all this rain come from?” Lightfrost asked her dam as she trotted over to her. “Not sure. Must have blown in from the west.” Morningcloud replied as Lightfrost began to suckle. After the twins had a feed, they trotted over to a clump of ferns to get out of the rain. Their water-repellent feathers protected most of their bodies from the wet but it still landed on their faces. They shaded each other with their feathers and looked around at their grassy territory. It was getting colder now and they knew that they had to migrate soon. They planned to migrate to the old Mountain herd territory and the foals were excited about travelling there. Suddenly a blinding flash of lightning filled the sky and Lightfrost squeezed her eyes shut to block out the light. A huge crack of thunder followed and it echoed throughout the valley. When Lightfrost opened her eyes, she saw Willowroot, their medicine mare, catering to a small grove of palms to where Riversun was laying. The two mares quickly went behind the trees and the foals lost sight of them. “What’s going on?” Lightfrost looked at her brother. “I think Riversun is in labour!” Oaktail replied, concern clouded his honey coloured eyes.
