The following in an excerpt from a child's history textbook in the Pegasi and Centaurs universe. I invite any contributing authors to propose new headings.

The Irich

  The first non-pegasi equines to live in Anok were the centaurs of what became the city-state of Irichad. These centaurs were a small cultural minority in the old world that shared a common langauage called Irich. They set sail hoping to find a place where they could live freely, safe from the interference of humans and centaurs alike. They have inhabited Anok for many generations, settling in the relative isolation and safety in northern Anok.

  In their settlement, which they named Irichad, the Irich people have enjoyed a progression of wise and good chiefs, with few exceptions. Though they came from various parts of the old world, they have all come to develop features like thick fur and large hooves which are necessary for the cold climate.

Johire’s Slave Revolt

  The majority of centaurs in the old world lived in miserable slavery to humans. This all changed when a centaur named Johire led a massive revolt against the human masters and overseers. Though Johire’s forces were overcome by the humans, the majority were able to escape to Anok. Johire was martyred in this climactic fight and has been a folk hero for centaurs ever since.

  Johire’s first ships arrived in Anok a little over 50 years ago, and most of the original settlers have died from various hardships. The settlements they founded include Mangrove and Johirestown. Their children, the first Centak speaking centaurs born in Anok, still hold many important positions of power today, including Councilors Fig, Bjorn, and Rayla and the King of Mangrove.

Slave Revolt Cont.

  After the loss of so many slaves, the human world entered a period of great instability. During this time, many more enslaved centaurs from different areas were able to escape to Anok. Despite the fact that these centaurs tended to have darker skin than earlier settlers and had legitimate cultural differences with them, they shared a common language and history of enslavement with Johire’s followers. In some cases they settled in same towns as earlier settlers, and in others they founded their own city-states, such as the mining town of Mt. Cutonon.

Iraweigh and the Cult of Lord Mono

  Both groups of Centak settlers contributed to the founding of Iraweigh. In its early days, colonists struggled mightily to survive and farm along the Weigh River. Old word food sources did not grow well in Anok and crops failed several years in a row. During this time of starvation, an Anok monkey brought the colonists roots and fruits from the forest, which they used to stave off famine and grow new sources of food.

  As Iraweigh became prosperous, the colonists attributed their success to Lord Mono, the Monkey God that came to help them survive. The religion that came from this unique movement is called the Cult of Lord Mono and widely practiced in the town’s stone temple.

The Royal Family of Mangrove

  Perhaps unusually for a people descended from slaves, Mangrove is ruled by the royal Livanii family. The monarchs claim to be descendants of Johire’s son in law. As well as the legitimacy bestowed on them by heredity, the Livaniis are also supremely wealthy due to their control over much of Anok’s maritime trade.

  Although the Livaniis are regarded as rightful rulers in Mangrove, many centaurs in cities such as Johirestown view them as frauds and claim they used their status as Johire’s descendants become wealthy and exploit the centaurs of Mangrove. It is true that Mangrove has the highest rate of crime in all of Anok.

Tyranny in Irichad

  While Irichad always had a reputation for isolationism, the last forty years saw it close itself off to the extreme. Under the rule of Chief Conan, citizens of Irichad lived in constant fear and mismanagement. Though several centaurs fled as refugees, very little is known about this period outside of Irichad.

  The current rulers, Chief Seamus and Chieftess Riona, have worked to restore Irichad to its previous state, but its reputation and likely its population have yet to fully recover.

Johiretown’s Expansionism

  In the last 25 years, Johirestown has become the premier centaur military power in Anok. By building up farming and then artisanal industries, Johirestown is able to support a large fighting force which it uses liberally and forcefully. Various small villages all over Anok have found themselves quickly invaded and overrun after running afoul of Johirestown. In many cases, villages have been forced to cede land to Johirestown and give up their independence to avoid ruin.

  Larger and wealthier cities like Mangrove and Mt. Cutonon pay an annual tribute to Johirestown to stay in good graces with its council. Other cities like Irichad are too far away to be threatened by Johirestown.

Industrial Iraweigh

  In the last decade, the people of Iraweigh have harnessed the power of the Weigh River to power water wheels for small textile factories. Centaurs from villages antagonized by Johirestown often migrate to Iraweigh to work in these mills and factories. As a result, Iraweigh’s once agrarian population has ballooned, and over 60% of Iraweigh’s adult population was born in other settlements. These immigrants have been welcomed by the Cult of Lord Mono. However, the few people who do not follow the monkey god have become alienated from general society, and the underclass of people descended from Thaler, a centaur said to have betrayed Johire, have been displaced from their traditional role in society as moneylenders to crueler treatment. This industrialization and population increase has also resulted in deforestation and contamination of the Weigh River.

3rd Wave Immigrants

  On a different landmass than the humans and their centaur slaves live several tribes of nomadic centaurs. Though their lives have been more or less peaceful for many generations, various spikes in tribal violence have led some to flee to Anok. It still remains a dangerous journey, but many deposed royalty and former tribal elites have been offered no choice by conquering invaders. They speak various tribal languages unrelated to Centak or Irich, and follow a different religion as well. It remains to be seen how many centaurs from this desert land will settle in Anok and what effect it will have on the history of the continent.
